About The Hotel Marblehead

Rich with history, The Hotel Marblehead is the perfect place to escape for your coastal New England getaway.

The Victorian Manor, now Hotel Marblehead, was originally built for J.P. Harris in 1871. Shortly after construction was completed, J.P. Harris died, and the house was sold to Mr. Otis Roberts, a prominent shoebox manufacturer on July 10, 1872. The house continued to change hands over the next decades, being sold to Elbridge Gerry Brown, a leather merchant, and his wife Caroline in 1880, and then again 1911, when it was sold to Orren Fairfield and his wife, a local attorney, before being sold to Emma J. Fairfield in 1917.

In the early 1920’s, Ms. Fairfield converted the home into a "summer guest house,” known as Pleasant Manor, where she would have friends, guests and celebrities come and stay, including Amelia Earhart and her mother, when they visited in 1923.

Over fifty years passed before the house changed hands again, when The Phelan family bought the house in 1975 to run it as an inn, with the help of their five children, and then, in 1997, the inn was purchased by the Rockett Family and renamed The Marblehead Inn. In 2011, the hotel changed again, this time becoming The Hotel Marblehead, when it underwent an extensive reimagining, updating the hotel with nautical inspiration and mid-century modern styling, to pay homage to its historical past while offering today's guests a comfortable, modern boutique stay experience. Enjoy your stay.
